NABL
What is NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories)
What is NABL ?
National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is an accreditation body. The NABL was established to provide a framework for the government, business associations, and the industry at large to independently assess the caliber and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
NABL standards are applicable in all kinds of laboratories including institutional research laboratories but in the medical diagnostic industry, these are mostly seen as a quality assurance procedure that includes internal and external reviews at par with worldwide quality standards.
It is the only certification body acknowledged by the Indian government that provides a neutral assessment of technical competence and lab standards. The NABL also has links with the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation.
Eligibility Criteria for NABL Approval
To qualify for NABL approval, an institution (CAB) must meet specific eligibility criteria:
- The institution must be a CAB involved in activities such as laboratory testing, calibration, food processing, or research and development.
- A representative must be appointed to initiate the NABL approval process, and they should be well-versed in the CAB's existing quality processes.
- The institution must have a documented manual outlining its quality standards in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005, ISO 15189:2012, or ISO/IEC 17043:2010.
- An appointed manager must undergo relevant training, including a minimum of 4 days of internal audit and management policy training.
- The CAB must implement its quality document immediately and satisfy the criteria outlined in NABL 130, which provides criteria for Site Testing and Site Calibration Laboratories.
- Participation in the Proficiency Training Program conducted by NABL or an international institution is mandatory. If unavailable, the institution can engage in inter-lab comparisons for quality assessment.
- The CAB must conduct at least one internal audit and management review before applying for NABL approval.
Steps for NABL Approval
The process of obtaining NABL approval involves several crucial steps:

Validity of the NABL Approval
Once an applicant obtains the certificate, its validity extends for a period of two years. NABL conducts annual surveillance as part of its process. To ensure continuous certification, the CAB is required to apply for license renewal prior to its expiration, ideally six months in advance.
